Undergraduate degrees are 4 years and are based on a credit system (20 full-time credits needed). Semesters begin in September and January, with two summer sessions in May and July. Graduate programs, including an M.Sc. in Applied Science with a coop option, are two years' full-time study. There is an International Activities Office to provide support, assistance and advice to international students, which has orientation sessions in September and January. Admission requirements. European students must have GCSE in 5 subjects, or 2 at Advanced level, or have the International Baccalaureate. Courses are carried out in English.

Since its founding in 1802, Saint Mary's has developed into a modern, urban university with 8,000 full and part-time students.It is one of the oldest English-speaking universities in Canada. St Mary's is located on the east coast, in Halifax, the capital of Nova Scotia, where most of the students (around 80%) come from. However, there is a distinct international aspect to the University with more than 10% students from many countries including China, Japan, Bermuda, the United States, and Mexico.
