The Italian university academic year begins on 1st November and ends on 31st. October of the following year. Lecture begin in October, and finish in mid-June. Courses may last a full year, or two semesters, the first one running until January, the second following a break in February, till mid-June). Academic calendar

There are holidays at Christmas and Easter and there is a long summer vacation. Lectures take place from Monday to Friday, both mornings and afternoons, and occasionally on Saturday mornings. Every year the faculties publish a guide of the respective courses with lecture names and syllabi. There are two exam sessions: summer and autumn, and a special winter session. Students are required to register for the exams a few days prior to the exams either by internet or directly on a computer in the Portineria/Reception of the Faculty. International Programme

The division of external relations instituted by the Chancellor, piazza Roma 22, is responsible for providing information with regards to student exchange as well as providing intermediary services in respect of the required documentation (programmes, modules, expiries, etc...) relative to international projects and activities (information tel. 071-2202318).

Before leaving your own country

You are advised to discuss the courses you intend follow in Ancona with your faculty Coordinator, who is in a position to provide you with useful information, as he/she is in contact with his/her Italian colleagues.

As soon as you are aware of your arrival date, please inform your Italian "tutor" or fax (+39.71.2202303) the registration form to: Servizio Rapporti Culturali ed Internazionali. You should already be able to follow lessons in Italian, but if you wish to improve your Italian you will need to arrive at the beginning of October in order to attend an Italian Language course. SOCRATES-ERASMUS and TEMPUS students do not have to pay any fees to attend this course. The following documents are required:

When you arrive in Italy

On arrival you are required to go to the International Office • Rettorato Universita • Piazza Roma n° 22 60100 Ancona (tel. +39-71- 2202344 fax +39-71-2202303). where you will be assisted with registration; you will be registered as a full time student without paying taxes and you will be covered by a insurance policy, all information about the procedures which must be followed will be given to you and you will be put in touch with your "tutor". You may obtain a Refectory card at the E.R.S.U. - Ente Regionale Diritto allo Studio Universitario, vicolo della Serpe n°1 (tel. 071 227411). Within a fortnight of your arrival you must present yourself to the Questura Foreigners certificate of stay: Questura • via Gervasoni n° 19. You will need:

Due to the E111 or E128 forms, which may be obtained at the Health Service in your country, you may benefit from medical treatment as if you were an Italian citizen. In order to benefit from this service you will need to go to the Azienda Unità Sanitaria Locale n.7, Distretto Centro, Via De Gasperi 86, Tel. 071-5965977, opening hours 9:00 a.m.- 12:00 p.m., Monday to Saturday, in order to obtain an Italian document. Furthermore, the University of Ancona has set up an insurance policy which covers all students in case of accidents whilst on University property.

Accommodation

The University of Ancona is not campus based. Therefore, we cannot guarantee accommodation for everyone. Finding accommodation in an apartment may be difficult, especially in October/November when all courses have already begun. There are some places available in Student Halls which are managed by the ERSU and situated in four different sites throughout the city:

Exams

Exams may be either oral or both written and oral and may be set over two or more provisional sessions (may focus on only one part of the program) The results of provisional exams are only considered at final assessment if they are positive. In such cases the final exam will only focus on the part of the program not reviewed during the provisional exams. In the event that the results of a provisional exam are negative, the final exam will comprise the entire programme. Provisional exams may only be taken during the periods stipulated by the faculty.

Language requirements

All undergraduate courses are in Italian, but post-graduate courses may be held in English if this has been negotiated beforehand.. However, Italian language lessons are available in the Media Centre which is open to students, lecturers and all University personnel who wish to learn (independently) a foreign language. The Media Centre provides an excellent support to language classes and is an effective way to refine your language skills. CSAL (Centro di supporto all'apprendimento delle lingue • Piazza Martelli • Tel. 071 2207170 • Fax 071 2207169) runs a course in Italian as a foreign language for all the University SOCRATES-ERASMUS and other international project students.
