The unique shape of the bay, called the "elbow", ensures wonderful sea views as well as views of the old city and the splendid Cathedral of Saint Ciriaco. are situated. . Cultural life in the city is enhanced by activities organised by the University, such as exhibitions, movie series and classical music concerts. The great Sea Festival takes place in September to celebrate Ancona's traditional and deep links to the sea with exhibitions, water sports, gatherings and other events. At present the University of Ancona, like all other European universities, is changing the structure of its degree system to conform with the Bologna Process (B.Sc - 3 years; M.Sc. 2 years;Ph.D. further 3 years). Courses are assessed by means of credit s with the ECTS available for visiting students ( 60 credits per year, 30 credits per semester- details elsewhere).The Italian academic year, begins on 1st November and ends on 31st. The University of Ancona, a new Italian university founded in 1969 , acquired its strong focus on marine biology when the Faculty of Natural Sciences, was set up in 1991.For its 13400 students, there are 248 professors, 156 researchers and573 administrative and technical employees. Though relatively new, the University has a strong network of national and international contacts, enabling it, to carry out a vigorous research and teaching programme. Ancona was founded in 390 BC by Greek colonists on a site inhabited since prehistoric times and has many interesting archaeological remains.



Language requirements. All undergraduate courses are in Italian, but post-graduate courses may be held in English if this has been negotiated beforehand.. However, Italian language lessons are available in the Media Centre is open to students, lecturers and all University personnel who wish to learn (independently) a foreign language. The Media Centre provides an excellent support to language classes and is an effective way to refine your language skills.
