THE PRESENT CONTINUOUS
In inglese c'è una seconda forma del tempo presente. Esso è usato per evidenziare che una azione si sta svolgendo ora, in questo momento.
E' formata usando il verbo 'to be' ed aggiungendo 'ing' alla radice principale del verbo
She is feeding the fish. (ora) (Lei sta nutrendo il pesce)
He is walking to the farm. (ora) (Egli sta camminando verso la fattoria)
Notare la totale differenza nel significato tra le due forme.
- She feeds the fish.
(Lei nutre il pesce) - (significa che lei lo fa ogni giorno, ma forse non lo sta facendo in questo momento.)
- She is feeding the fish.
(Lei sta nutrendo il pesce) - (significa che lei lo sta facendo esattamente in questo momento, ma non significa che lei lo faccia ogni giorno.)

Con il presente continuato facciamo anche domande e frasi negative. Quando facciamo domande nel presente continuato, cambiamo l'ordine delle parole.
- What are you doing?
(Cosa stai facendo?) - I am not preparing the sample yet because I am looking in the lab for a test tube.
(Non sto ancora preparando il campione perché sto cercando una provetta per le analisi nel laboratorio) - What is the fish doing?
(Cosa sta facendo il pesce?) - The fish is swimming in the water.
(Il pesce sta nuotando nell'acqua) - Where is the technician going?
(Dove sta andando il tecnico) - He is not going to the laboratory. He is going to make a telephone call.
(Non sta andando in laboratorio. Sta andando a fare una telefonata)
